“Kevin Purcell will be performing “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.” Local a capella trio The Free-Range Chicks, will be the opening act.
“A Child’s Christmas in Wales” was written by 20th century Welsh poet Dylan Thomas and is one of his most enduring works. It is a personal, nostalgic and often comical recollection of past Christmases and evokes memories of the season at every turn: the warmth of a family gathering, including odd relatives, the loveliness of a mistletoe-decked home, the predictability of cats by the fire, the mischief of children left to their own devices, and the delight of gifts, whether they are useful or useless.

Purcell, a native of Chicago and a graduate of SIU, has been bringing these memories to life every holiday season since 1977. He began memorizing the short story, word by word, as a senior in high school. Purcell has worked professionally in Seattle, and has toured his other solo shows in the Pacific Northwest and in Illinois. He has directed several shows for The Stage Company, the resident theater at The Varsity, and will be directing the February show, “Agnes of God.”

The Free-Range Chicks is an a capella retro jazz-swing trio that performs old-time jazz and swing mixed with a dash of country, pop and folk. The trio consists of Molly Beckley and Ruth Ann Levinson of Cobden and Pat York of Carbondale.”
