‘Friday’ at The Varsity on Friday
Ticket stub gets you $5 off Ice Cube’s SIU show Saturday

CARBONDALE – It’s going to be an Ice Cube weekend in Carbondale, beginning Friday with a showing of his movie, “Friday,” at The Varsity. The rapper, actor and producer will appear in concert at SIU Arena. That show begins at 8 p.m.

Anyone who attends the movie and takes proof of ticket to SIU will get $5 off the concert ticket.

Ice Cube, a multi-talented rapper, actor and producer, wrote the script for the 1995 movie; DJ Pooh was co-writer.

Ice Cube and Chris Tucker, appearing in his first starring role, play two friends who smoke a dope dealer’s marijuana early on a Friday, then have to find a way to pay the $200 they owe him by 10 p.m. that night. The movie also stars Nia Long, Tommy Lister Jr., Regina King, Bernie Mac and John Witherspoon.

Before the release of “Friday,” movies such as “Boyz n the Hood, which also starred Ice Cube, portrayed life in the hood as violent and menacing. Ice Cube has said he felt these films didn’t portray the full picture of living in bad neighborhoods. “We had fun in the hood,” Ice Cube told Complex magazine. “We used to trip off the neighborhood.”

He and writing partner DJ Pooh decided to create a film that would portray those environments in a different way. The film’s success resulted in two sequels, “Next Friday” and “Friday After Next.” A fourth film titled “Last Friday” is in production.

“Friday” will be shown at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 27. Tickets are $5 and are available in advance online at www.thevarsitycenter.org. Tickets also will be available at the door on the night of the movie, beginning at 7. That’s also when the Varsity Bar opens, featuring for sale local and other beer and wine, select cocktails, soda and snacks.

The movie is rated R for pervasive strong language and drug use, and for a brutal fight. Anyone under 17 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

The Varsity is downtown at 418 S. Illinois Ave. To keep up with events, go to www.facebook.com/varsitycenter.
