Two classic Christmas movies to be shown at The Varsity

CARBONDALE – After purchasing two new screens and projector, the Varsity wasted no time in scheduling movies. This month, the downtown venue will be showing two classic Christmas movies.

“National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” is up first with a showing at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15. The 1946 classic “It’s a Wonderful Life” will be screened at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23. It’s a perfect opportunity to take a little break from the last-minute holiday crush.

In “It’s a Wonderful Life,” we meet down-and-out businessman George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart); his tireless wife, Mary (Donna Reed); and money-grubbing Henry Potter (Lionel Barrymore). Despairing George believes his small-town life’s been a failure, but will a hapless angel named Clarence and a Christmas Eve miracle convince him otherwise? (1946) PG

In the hilarious comedy “Christmas Vacation,” Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) wants to have a perfect family Christmas, so he pesters his wife, Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo), and children, as he tries to make sure everything is in line, including the tree and house decorations. However, things go awry quickly. His hick cousin, Eddie (Randy Quaid), and his family show up unplanned and start living in their camper on the Griswold property. Even worse, Clark’s employers renege on the holiday bonus he needs. (1989) PG-13

Admission to each movie is only $5, and doors open 30 minutes before show time. The Varsity bar will offer beverages for adults and children, as well as treats.

The Varsity is downtown Carbondale at 418 S. Illinois Ave. For more information on upcoming events, go to www.thevarsitycenter.org.
