The Varsity opens its holiday movie season with
‘Planes, Trains and Automobiles,’ ‘The Sound of Music’

CARBONDALE – The Varsity is excited to announce six weekends of fantastic holiday movie fare. Opening the schedule is “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” on Friday, Nov. 16, followed by “The Sound of Music” on Nov. 23.

The entire movie lineup is a perfect chance to take a little break from the holiday crush.

“Planes, Trains and Automobiles” is a 1987 comedy that was written, produced and directed by John Hughes. The film stars Steve Martin as Neal Page, a high-strung marketing exec who meets Del Griffith, played by John Candy, an eternally optimistic, outgoing, talkative and clumsy salesman who sells shower curtain rings. The pair share a three-day trek filled with misadventures as they try to get Neal home to Chicago from New York City in time for Thanksgiving with his family. As with all John Hughes film, there’s a heartwarming message and a happy ending. The movie is rated R for adult situations and language.

“The Sound of Music” is a 1965 movie based on the real-life story of the Von Trapp Family singers. This tuneful, heartwarming story has become one of the world’s best-loved movie musicals. Julie Andrews plays the role of Maria, the tomboyish postulant at an Austrian abbey who becomes a governess in the home of a widowed naval captain (Christopher Plummer) with seven children, bringing a new love of life and music into the home. The music was written by musical giants Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. It is rated G.

Movie showings begin at 7; doors and The Varsity Bar open at 6:30. The Varsity bar offers beverages for adults and children, as well as snacks.
