CARBONDALE – The Varsity’s Thursday night Art House film series continues on Sept. 13 with the astute family drama “The Past.”

An Iranian man, separated from his wife, returns to Paris to attend their divorce hearing. Re-establishing relationships with his stepchildren, he finds himself embroiled in the turmoil of his wife’s new relationship and the deteriorating relationship of his wife and her eldest daughter, who is concealing a shattering secret.

“The Past” is a 2013 French-Italian-Iranian film, written and directed by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi and starring Bérénice Bejo (“The Artist”), Tahar Rahim and Ali Mosaffa. The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival and won the festival’s Prize of the Ecumenical Jury. Bejo also won the festival’s Best Actress Award.

Director Asghar Farhadi is an Iranian filmmaker who has twice won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for “The Separation” in 2012 and “The Salesman” in 2017.

The Varsity will show “The Past” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept 13. Tickets are $7 for general admission, $5 for students, and are available in advance at www.thevarsitycenter.org.

Tickets also will be available at the venue on the night of the show when doors and the bar open at 6:30 p.m. The Varsity Bar features beer, wine, select cocktails, non-alcoholic beverages, snacks and popcorn.

“The Past” is not rated.
