Carbondale may be a small town, but it offers big-city entertainment. Between the Southern Illinois University Arena, which has hosted concerts by Bob Dylan, B.B. King, Elton John, and McLeod Theater, which brings shows such as “Chicago” and “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” Carbondale sees some of the nation’s favorite performances.
When the larger venues are taking a break, Carbondale’s downtown picks up. The historic Varisty Center for the Arts in downtown Carbondale hosts performances by The Stage Company, and often features music by local and national artists. Copper Dragon Brewing Company, Hangar 9, Tres Hombres, and the Premiere Lounge all serve as memorable venues, and bring great music on a weekly basis.
If you’re not interested in the nightlife, Carbondale’s movie theaters are conveniently located near the University Mall. The city also is home to a thriving art and culture scene.
