CARBONDALE – He’s very naughty … and not very nice, which is an accurate description of Billy Bob Thornton’s character in “Bad Santa,” which The Varsity will screen on Friday, Nov. 30.
The 2003 dark comedy centers on Willie (Thornton) a crude, alcoholic, ex-con who works once a year as a department store Santa. Teamed with the equally foulmouthed Marcus (Tony Cox) as one of Santa’s elves, the pair rob stores blind just before Christmas. But this year the mall’s security chief (Bernie Mac) gets wise to their plan and wants a cut, while trying to keep the mall manager (the late John Ritter in his last film role) in the dark.
“Bad Santa” was the sleeper hit of Christmas 2003, earned rave reviews and has since attained cult status with fans watching it every holiday season. In his original review critic Roger Ebert described the movie as “a demented, twisted, unreasonably funny work of comic kamikaze style.”
The film’s director, Terry Zwigoff, said, “I always had faith in it. Despite a superficial interpretation that it’s a film fueled by vulgarity, it has an important message. Consumerism can destroy us. Plus, it’s really funny.”
Tickets are $7 general admission or $5 for students with ID. Available in advance at www.thevarsitycenter.eventbrite.com and at the venue when the doors and bar open at 6:30 p.m. Advance tickets are not available at the venue until the doors open on the night of the showing. “Bad Santa” is rated R for pervasive language, strong sexual content and some violence. No one younger than 17 will be admitted without a parent or guardian.
