Bill Murray stars in ‘Groundhog Day,’ which was released 25 years ago in February. The Varsity will be showing the movie Friday, Feb. 2, which is actually Groundhog Day.
CARBONDALE – What better way to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of “Groundhog Day” than on Groundhog Day?
The movie, released in February 1993, will be showing at The Varsity on Friday, Feb. 2. The classic and near-cult status movie is No. 2 on the Rolling Stone Readers’ Poll of all-time favorite Bill Murray movies.
The fantasy-comedy film was directed by Harold Ramis, and stars Murray, Andie MacDowell and Chris Elliott. Murray plays Phil Connors, an arrogant and cynical Pittsburg TV weatherman who is assigned coverage of the annual Groundhog Day events in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. On his way out of town, Phil is caught in a giant blizzard, which he failed to predict, and finds himself in what he considers small-town hell. Just when things can’t get any worse, Phil wakes up the next morning to find it is Groundhog Day all over again – and again, and again.
“Groundhog Day” will show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2. Tickets are $5. Advance tickets are available only through our online ticket office; find the link at www.thevarsitycenter.org. Tickets also will be available at the doors beginning at 6:15 on the night of the show.
Running time is 1 hour and 41 minutes; it is rated PG.
