CARBONDALE – You might have seen it before, most likely on a small screen somewhere. But, John Carpenter, writer and director of 1978’s “Halloween,” recommends you see it on the big screen.

“I think most people have probably seen the movie at home, or on pay-per-view, or on television,” Carpenter told Entertainment Weekly in September. “But the place to see the film is on a big screen, in the theater. It was designed for theaters, the lighting was designed for theaters. This is the best place to see it.”

The Varsity will screen the film twice on Halloween night, at 7 and 9 p.m. on Oct. 31, just a few days after the 40th anniversary of its premiere on Oct. 25, 1978. The movie stars Donald Pleasance and Jamie Lee Curtis in her feature film debut.

The movie centers on Michael Myers, who, on a cold Halloween night in 1963, brutally murdered his 17-year-old sister. He was sentenced and locked away. But, on Oct. 30, 1978, while being transferred for another court date, a 21-year-old Michael escapes, steals a car and returns to his quiet hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois, where he looks for – and finds – his next victims.

Revered Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert called the movie a “merciless thriller.”

The movie is rated R for nudity, violence, gore, language; people younger than 17 will not be admitted without a parent or guardian. Go to https://youtu.be/xHuOtLTQ_1I to watch the official movie trailer.
