Southern Illinois Symphony Presents: “Stars of Altgeld”
On Tuesday, November 15 at 7:30pm in Shryock Auditorium, the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra (SISO), under Music Director Edward Benyas, presents its annual “Stars of Altgeld” concert. The concert features instrumental and vocal soloists, winners of the annual School of Music Solo Competition. The program also includes the Southern Illinois Civic Orchestra, the SISO’s training orchestra.
The Solo Competition winners are James Vilseck, marimba, performing a concerto by 21st century composer, Eric Ewazen; Emily Dworak, soprano, performing the famous aria, “Vilja” from the 19th century operetta, “The Merry Widow,” by Franz Lehar; and Minji Kim, piano, performing the exciting Finale from Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto. SIU graduate conducting students, Katrina Walczyk and Jeffrey Chow will conduct the Ewazen and Tchaikovsky.
The Civic Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Benyas, opens the concert with selections from the world of opera, including Verdi’s Overture to “Nabucco” and Triumphal March from “Aida,” Borodin’s Polevetsian Dances from “Prince Igor,” Mascagni’s beautiful Intermezzo from “Cavalleria Rusticana,” a medley of themes from Puccini operas, and George Gershwin’s “Summertime.” SIU graduate vocal students, Brynn Scozzari, soprano, and Nyghel Byrd, baritone, perform as soloists in two charming duets by Mozart.
The orchestras and soloists will perform excerpts from the evening concert in an hour-long admission-free performance for school children of any age at 10am on November 15 in Shryock Auditorium. No reservations are required.
Regular tickets for the November 15 evening concert are $20; tickets for students of any age are $8.
