The Varsity Center
CARBONDALE – Mo Pitney will be bringing his special brand of traditional country music to The Varsity Center, where he will present an evening of acoustic music on The Balcony Stage on Thursday, Sept. 14.
Pitney has been earning praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, Billboard and NPR music for his pure approach.
“There’s not a lot of vocal acrobatics or technical gimmicks involved with Pitney,” wrote Billboard. “Instead, the singer possesses one of the most traditional-sounding vocal styles we have heard in years.”
Pitney was born in Rockford and began playing the drums at 6 and guitar at 12. He played in a bluegrass band with his brother and a friend before moving to Nashville, where he signed to Curb Records and began working with record producer Tony Brown.
Pitney released his first single, “Country,” in December 2014. It charted at No. 10 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums in its first week. It was co-written with country great Bill Anderson and Bobby Tomberlin. His second single, “Boy & a Girl Thing,” reached No. 50 on Hot Country Songs in August 2015. Pitney’s debut album, “Behind This Guitar,” was released in October 2016. It charted on Billboard’s Top Country Albums in its first week.
The Mo Pitney concert begins at 7:30 Thursday, Sept. 14. Tickets are $15 in advance, only at thevarsitycenter.eventbrite.com. They are $20 at the door the night of the show at 7 p.m. VIP tickets are also available, in advance only, for $25. Those tickets include a meet-and-greet with Pitney before doors open.
